Antique Mahogany Lincoln Rocking Chair. Beautifully carved floral detail at top of back. Made in the late 1850's to late 1860's. These chairs were popular during the Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln was sitting in one when he was shot in 1865; and they became known as Lincoln Rockers.
Good condition for its age. Solid mahogany wood frame appears to be very sturdy and good for many more years. Some repairs to wood. See photos of two metal supports in back. Needs new upholstery.
The rocker was purchased at auction at an estate sale at a mansion in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, in 1974. It was re-upholstered in 1974 using the original springs and horsehair. Cotton batting, burlap, muslin, and upholstery fabric were replaced. Also webbing on the back was replaced.
It needs new upholstery fabric again; but the underpinnings should be still in usable condition as the chair has been kept in air conditioning and seldom used. Chair measures about 39 deep x 24 wide x 41.5 high.
