Written by the Author : I wrote Combat House to House as a how-to manual for those about to engage in urban combat. I tried to make it easily read, absorbed and even enjoyed. The book proved greatly popular and well over 5000 print editions were sold. It was written during the early phases of the civil war in Lebanon, only weeks before the kidnappings and suicide bombers. The Cold War still gripped the globe and by the late 1970’s street fighting was often ignored in the shadows of nukes, massed tanks and bearded rural revolutionary guerillas. Then, after nearly a generation of bush wars; war moved back to town. Combat House to House is about pitched battle in built-up areas and presupposes civilians have evacuated. It is not big on surgical finesse or political correctness. Research came from the few earlier works on the subject, and, from observations in the streets and buildings of Beirut. Many of the photos were taken there by me. More still come from photographer Gary Flanagan. Dozens of drawings illustrate weapons and techniques. Chapters include Individual Knowledge, Team Equipment, Defending an Area, Defending a Building, Attacking an Area, Attacking a Building, Rescue and Hand Signals.. In the 30 years since the book was written there have been advances in weapons and techniques.
