This first American edition (Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1977) is in great condition for its age. The exterior surfaces show no obvious shelf wear. The binding is tight and the pages retain the original “mocha” or “beige” color. There is no discoloration (foxing) on the pages.
The fold out map is still attached and in perfect condition. The dust jacket is in overall good condition with three tears – a tiny nick at the lower front, a small tear at the top front, and a more noticeable tear at the top of the spine (see pictures 10-12). A previous owner put an additional clear plastic dust jacket over the original to protect it.
Green cloth binding with title in gilt on spine.
At the right top of the first end sheet there is some very faint writing. It appears(??) that the book may have been discounted from a book shop many years ago and the price was erased (see picture 9). I mention this only for transparency.
This volume is NOT the Book Club Edition. This one has the original price on the inside jacket flap and an ISBN on the back cover. Not price-clipped.
