Kai Kristiansen (Designer)
Born in 1929, Kai Kristiansen was a Danish born furniture designer specializing in modernistic design. Like some others in his field Kristiansen began his career with cabinet making. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under the famed Kaare Klint. At 26 years old, Kristiansen opened his own studio in Copenhagen where he would work on his functionalistic furniture. Like many Danish furniture makers of the time, he would become a key player in the Mid-Century Modern design movement. Famous for his use of oak, teak, and rosewood in his sleek furniture designs, he produced geometric tables, chairs, and cabinets.
To gain popularity, Kristiansen thought it would be a better idea to have his furniture manufactured versus hand built to lower the cost. He thought this would give people a chance to own his modern pieces without spending too much money as well as increase his sales. With quality and design being a top priority, Kristiansen was able to become a well-recognized artist of the period. The timeless designs still draw many purchasers.
His designs would be produced by well-known Danish manufacturers, such as Feldballes Møbelfabrik, Fornem Møbelkunst, Fritz Hansen, Vildbjerg Møbelfabrik, and Magnus Olesen.
