Raising healthy baby rhea chicks requires a specialized approach, as these flightless birds need daily exercise for proper leg and digestive development.
To encourage natural running, provide large, secure, non-slip outdoor runs, limit daily feed to prevent dangerous weight gain, and gently guide them to sprint and forage daily.
Give them supervised outside adventures in the sun as soon as the weather and their feathering permit, generally around 3 weeks old.
Start small and grow as the birds grow. Fresh chicks need approximately 100 sq ft, medium birds 250 to 500 sq ft, and adults 1,000 sq ft.
Proceed with caution. Rheas, in general, are highly sensitive to stress and toxins. Avoid exposing them to any harsh household chemicals or sudden loud noises.
We have Rhea chicks available! $250 each. Must purchase at least two because they do not do as well when raised alone.
